Model TR10GA, 10 GHz Gunnplexer® transceiver and TR24GA, 24 GHz Gunnplexer® transceiver are complete, ready to use, communications systems for fm voice and cw operation. A 12 Vdc power supply, microphone and headphone and/or loudspeaker are the only additional items needed for operation. The heart of the transceiver is a Gunnplexer® which is manufactured by M/A-Com Inc. TR10GA and TR24GA transceivers may be purchased with or without the Gunnplexer®. Purchased with the Gunnplexer®, it is installed with the 17 dB horn antenna protruding from the rear panel of the transceiver. Configured this way, the one package assembly is ideal for portable operation. The TR10GA/TR24GA is designed so that the Gunnplexer® can be removed from the transceiver and be remotely mounted to a tower or attached to a parabolic antenna. Three shielded cables (such as RG-58/U) are required to connect the Gunnplexer® to the remote connectors on the rear panel of the transceiver. Installed in this manner, the Gunnplexer®/horn antenna or parabolic dish assembly can be mounted on a fixed or rotatable mast above any surrounding obstacles and the TR10GA/TR24GA is then placed indoors at some convenient location. This two package assembly is best suited for fixed station use.
Frequency tuning of the TR10GA/TR24GA is accomplished by adjusting the Gunnplexer® varactor diode voltage. The main tuning dial drives a 10-turn potentiometer which controls this varactor diode voltage. Frequency readout is indicated as varactor tuning voltage as displayed on the tune/center meter. TR10GA/TR24GA Gunnplexer® transceivers use a 30-MHz i-f receiver system. For two Gunnplexer® equipped stations to be in communications, each must use the same i-f. 30 MHz has become the standard i-f in the U.S. with 10.250 GHz and 10.280 GHz (24.125 GHz and 24.155 GHz) as standard operating frequencies. Every TR10GA/TR24GA is supplied with a frequency/tuning voltage calibration sheet. Calibrations are made at room temperature and since the 10 GHz Gunnplexer has a -350° C (-750° C for 24 GHz) temperature coefficient some discrepancy between frequency and tuning voltage may occur. Fortunately, in practice, when operating in all but the most extreme temperatures the frequency of operation will be indicated within 1 volt of the appropriate meter reading.
Frequency stability of the TR10GA/TR24GA is a function of the Gunnplexer® VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) stability. The VCO is essentially a temperature compensated free running cavity oscillator and requires some form of frequency control. TR10GA/TR24GA transceivers use a dual polarity afc system which frequency locks one unit to another. A dual polarity afc system is used as one TR10GA/TR24GA may be operated either above or below the frequency of the second unit thereby requiring opposite sense afc. While the afc system on board the TR10GA/TR24GA does an effective job at keeping the two Gunnplexers® "locked up" for long periods of time, it is not suitable for unattended operation. Should the two Gunnplexers® loose lock, there is no proactive mechanism to reacquire afc lock. Check out the search and lock system SL01VD which addresses this situation.
One of the more interesting features of the TR10GA/TR24GA is full duplex capability. Full duplex means that each station may transmit and receive simultaneously, much like communications over a telephone system.
The TR10GA/TR24GA Gunnplexer® transceivers are supplied with a detailed instruction manual which includes sections on using the TR10GA/TR24GA, signal propagation, theory of operation, alignment and a complete schematic diagram. A copy of this manual is available on request. All Advanced Receiver Research products carry a full one year warranty.
